Dragon Age: Inquisition Review

Dragon Age: Inquisition. Note: As of this writing, I have logged about 70 hours and not beaten the game yet. Story: One of the major complaints that I've read about this game seems to be that the story is considered "weak." While I am still in the process of playing the game, I don't find the story to be that bad. It certainly isn't ground-breaking or completely original, but it isn't a string of cliches either. Gameplay: I am not really a fan of the "tactical camera." I find that it takes too long and I don't like micro-managing my people that much. However, this is a personal choice and I haven't had any trouble or issues using it, it's just not for me. One thing I noticed while fighting a dragon is that you can target the dragon's individual legs and head. When I first saw this I was excited because my plan was to cut it's front two legs out from under it and take it down. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Each of the limbs health bars are tied into the main health bar so I'm not really sure what the point of it is since you can't cripple the dragon. That being said, it does work when fighting giants. You can target their legs and make them fall down. There are a ridiculous number of side-quests and collectibles. Maybe I'm a completionist or something but I love it. None of the quests seemed like fed-ex quests or kill X amount of Y's even though that's exactly what they are. Each quest I've done feels like it's contributing to the over-all scheme of things instead of just being filler. Graphics: Here is the biggest issue I've had with the game. Most of the time, the game looks gorgeous. However, several times I've run into issues with the cut-scenes locking up or cutting in and out. Most noticeably during the love scene with my companion (which I don't really care about) and while talking with a Grey Warden during their quest line - every time he would speak, the scene would just freeze until I pressed the square button to skip dialogue, so I'm pretty sure I missed some stuff there. Finally, while fighting a high dragon the frame rate on my game dropped to such a low level it was nigh-unplayable. The fight started out okay, but the dragon would scream and summon dragonlings to help and I killed so many of the dragonlings the field was littered with their corpses. I literally had to stop fighting and start looting just to help clear some stuff off. It helped a little, but not much. Conclusion: Definitely a great RPG. It's a worthy successor to Dragon Age: Origins (I never played II so I can't comment on that). While it suffers from occasional frame rate and cut-scene issues, it's still possesses enough redeeming qualities to offset anything negative.
